CBD Oil Versus Hemp Oil For Dogs

Hemp oil, hemp clothing, hemp dog treats — hemp seems to be everywhere these days. As a dog owner, you might be having a tough time keeping track of what’s what.

The term hemp oil can be especially confusing. If you’ve ever wondered…

  • Does hemp oil contain THC?
  • Is hemp oil safe for dogs?
  • What’s the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil?

...then read on, because we’re sniffing out the answers!

The Difference Between CBD Oil & Hemp Oil

You know how a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square?

It’s a similar situation with CBD oil and hemp seed oil. But don’t get your leash all in a tangle over this — we’re about to break it down like a chew toy at a puppy party.

We’ll start with the “rectangle” in this situation: hemp seed oil, sometimes called hemp oil.

Hemp seed oilis extracted from hemp seeds of the cannabis plant. The seeds don’t contain CBD or THC, and they do not produce CBD oil. Hemp seeds do have nutritional value, though.

Hemp seed oil is not CBD oil. Got it? Cool.

CBD oil is extracted from Cannabis sativa L. Both hemp and marijuana are varieties of the Cannabis sativa L. plant species.

After the 2018 Farm Bill made industrial hemp legal across the land of the free, CBD made from industrial hemp became widely available.

So, technically, some CBD is a hemp oil. And, some folks and CBD companies might call it hemp oil. But, CBD oil is not the same as hemp seed oil, mainly because CBD oil is full of cannabidiol. (That’s what CBD stands for.)

Cannabidiol is the cannabis compound everyone is howling about for its non-psychoactive — aka won’t get your dog high — benefits. Depending on the type of CBD, it may also contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

It’s important for paw-rents to know the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil because they have different benefits and uses.

Let’s dig into those differences, shall we?

Benefits & Uses Of Hemp Seed Oil For Dogs

Many of hemp seed oil’s health benefits come from its omega fatty acid content. You might be familiar with omegas if you give your pet a fish oil supplement. They’re the “good” fats.

Hemp seed oil is a plant-based source of these beneficial fats, including omega-3 and omega-6.

Here are some of the benefits your dog might get from omega supplements like hemp seed oil:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Shiny coat and healthy skin
  • Heart, brain, and immune health support
  • Reduced chance of canine cancer

The efficacy of omega-rich fish oil for canine health has been well researched, especially for reducing inflammation. Hemp-derived omegas haven’t been studied in dogs.

Hemp seed oil contains small amounts of other things that may be good for your pup, like chlorophyll and vitamin E.

Overall, hemp seed oil is a nutritional supplement that could be used in place of your dog’s fish oil supplement. You shouldn’t expect to see an immediate result.

Benefits & Uses Of CBD Oil For Dogs

All mammals have an endocannabinoid system that responds to CBD. So, while our four-legged mammal pals can’t exactly tell us what they’re feeling, we know they can get benefits from CBD like their humans do.

Research points to many health benefits of CBD. Some common reasons owners give their pets CBD include:

  • Reduced inflammation from arthritis and other conditions
  • Relief from separation anxiety and hyperactivity
  • Digestion support
  • Immune support and relief from allergies
  • Nausea reduction during cancer therapy
  • Surgery or injury recovery support
  • Overall wellness and preventative care

Unlike hemp seed oil, you’re more likely to notice the effects of CBD on your dog. Depending on how your pooch responds and the results you’re looking for, you might observe a change in a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here’s what Pure Craft pet parents have to say about their canine’s CBD experience.

So we have been using this for literally 2 days. I can really see the difference in my senior dog. He has had some hip issues and has been so much more mobile. Thank you, seriously! - Ashley

My pup had a serious case of poor digestion. We have tried everything and so far this CBD oil has been working like a treat! - Gabriel

Our dog finally managed to sleep through the night! - Scott

Best Practices For Giving Your Dog Hemp Products

Whether you choose to give your dog CBD oil, hemp oil, or both, they have similar best practices.

  • Both hemp seed oil and CBD oil might be referred to as hemp oil. So, be sure to inspect the label
  • It’s a good idea to check with your veterinarian before giving your pet any supplement or CBD product.
  • When it comes to CBD oil and supplements for pets, quality matters. Go for organic hemp seed oil, and CBD oil made from organic hemp. After all, your best friend deserves the best!
  • For CBD oil products, you should also check out the Certificate of Analysis to make sure it doesn’t contain THC or any other undesirable ingredients. The Certificate of Analysis is available for every Pure Craft CBD product on the product page.
  • They both require consistent usage. Be patient and consistent with your dog’s regimen, and keep plenty of product on hand so you don’t miss a dose.

Which To Choose: Hemp Oil Or CBD Oil For Dogs?

Both CBD oil and hemp oil can be part of a healthy canine lifestyle. But, as you can see, there are some key differences between hemp seed oil and CBD oil.

  • Hemp seed oil can give your pooch’s omegas and nutrition a boost.
  • CBD oil could provide more immediate relief from inflammation, anxiety, digestive issues, and other conditions in dogs.

If you choose to use CBD, make sure it doesn’t have more than 0.3% THC content. A CBD oil made for pets is the best choice.

You’re the best advocate for your pet’s health, so communicate with your vet and choose the best hemp and CBD products for your dog’s needs.
